Dermaplaning at SkinOvation Advanced Aesthetics
Every day, skin is exposed to environmental stressors, which, when combined with internal factors, have a negative impact on skin. To address this, dermaplaning removes the topmost layer of skin to reveal brighter skin beneath which results in a glowing, refreshed appearance.
This procedure involves passing a medical-grade scalpel at a 45-degree angle over the entire face. The blade removes the dead skin cells and tiny hairs called vellus hair which can give skin an uneven texture. Dermaplaning can be compared to a nonabrasive exfoliation with the added benefit of hair removal.
After a session, your skin will be noticeably brighter and smoother. Skin care products will absorb more effectively, and makeup will sit more evenly on your skin. You’ll also be less susceptible to acne breakouts, as your face’s natural oil won’t be trapped in your skin by dead skin cells or hair.
With repeated treatments, dermaplaning can also reduce hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, minimize pores and smooth out depressed acne scars.

Who are the Best Candidates for Dermaplaning?
Almost all men and women are good candidates for dermaplaning. This procedure is safe for all skin types and tones.
However, if you have active acne, rosacea, psoriasis, eczema or any condition that compromises your skin health, other treatments may be more appropriate; this procedure may cause excessive skin peeling and irritation.

What Can You Treat with Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning addresses many common skin concerns, including:
- Acne scars (depressed only)
- Dullness
- Dryness
- Enlarged pores
- Fine lines
- Hyperpigmentation
- Recurring acne (should not be performed during active breakouts)
- Sun damage
- Unwanted hair
What to Expect During Your Dermaplaning Treatment
At your treatment, our licensed esthetician will first prepare your face by cleansing your skin and applying a rich, moisturizing oil. They will then pass a small, ultra-sharp scalpel over your entire face.
The dermaplaning process will last approximately 20–30 minutes. Your esthetician will then apply a soothing, cooling gel or mask to your skin, followed by sunscreen.
In the first few days after treatment, your skin may be slightly red and tender. During this period, avoid the sun, and in the weeks following treatment, wear a sunscreen of SPF 30 as the newly exposed skin will be more susceptible to damage.
As the redness diminishes, you’ll see the full benefits of your treatment. Your skin will be brighter and smoother; if you wear makeup, you’ll likely notice that products such as foundation apply more evenly.
Your results will last approximately 3–4 weeks. Many of our patients choose to book regular monthly appointments with us to maintain their post-appointment glow.

- Chemical peels: We offer a range of chemical peel options to exfoliate, brighten and tighten your skin, from mild enzyme peels and deeper TCA peels to everything in between
- Microneedling: Achieve firmer, younger-looking skin, and reduce scars and dark spots with the help of a stamping device tipped with tiny needles
Several of these treatments can be performed as add-ons to your dermaplaning session. Your freshly exfoliated skin absorbs topicals and IPL light more effectively, helping the procedures generate even greater results. For hair removal, the light will also target your hair follicles more effectively after dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning FAQ
Is dermaplaning safe?
When performed by a qualified professional in a sterile environment, dermaplaning is entirely safe.
Because dermaplaning is a simple mechanical exfoliation, it has very few possible side effects beyond temporary redness. Rare adverse effects include scarring and infection. Reduce your risk of these effects by only frequenting a reputable medspa or clinic staffed by qualified experts.
Will my hair grow back thicker or darker?
No. Vellus hair will always grow back as soft and fine as it once originally. However, if you have very thick or dark hair on your cheeks, upper lip or chin, you may notice stubble a few days after your session. Should this be the case, you may want to consider IPL hair removal instead.
How often can I get dermaplaning?
We recommend waiting at least 3–4 weeks between each dermaplaning session. It’s estimated that each session removes 21 days of damage from skin, and you want your skin to recover fully between appointments.
Other factors to keep in mind are any exfoliating products you use, which extend the results of your dermaplaning sessions as well as your age: skin cell turnover rate decreases with age; therefore, the older you are, the less often you need to exfoliate.
What’s the difference between dermaplaning and microdermabrasion?
These two exfoliating techniques are often confused, but they’re very different. Dermaplaning uses a razor, and removes both hair and dead skin cells; microdermabrasion uses a spray of tiny crystals to remove dead skin cells but doesn’t address unwanted hair. It’s also not as deep or effective a treatment as dermaplaning.
